An underground market for unapproved slimming drugs is being driven by TikTok fitness influencers and vendors on communication apps, based on new investigations.

Separately, a robust market exists on Telegram, where groups with thousands of participants share comparison photos, injection guides and assertions of next-day UK delivery. Sellers promote the substance there before redirecting customers to WhatsApp for purchases.

Retatrutide is an investigational injectable created by US drugmaker Eli Lilly. The treatment targets three intestinal hormones – glucagon-like peptide-1, GIP and pancreatic hormone. Early trials indicate it could assist patients lose up to 25% of their body weight. Nicknamed the “triple G”, the drug is being hailed online as the next Ozempic.

Healthcare Professionals Express Worries

However, doctors and chemists have warned that the sale of what remains an unapproved medication in the United Kingdom is worrisome and could result in individuals injecting substances of uncertain source.

Some content creators try to circumvent the regulations by referring to the substance as a “research chemical” or describing it as “not for human consumption”. Retatrutide is not a restricted substance, but promotion and distribution can still violate pharmaceutical, advertising, and customer laws, potentially leading to fines, prosecution or imprisonment.

Service Reaction and Content Removal

According to TikTok, the service has taken down violative material and prohibited associated keywords and search suggestions. The organization stated it was dedicated to maintaining the platform safe and investing in enhancing enforcement strategies.

Investigations also found groups with up to 9,000 members selling retatrutide using the platform's integrated search feature, which operates like a public directory. Typing “retatrutide” instantly brings up channels with numerous of users, filled with photos of weight loss, positive reviews and step-by-step instructions for preparing or administering at home.

After minutes of joining one community, a seller shared contact information, where most purchases take place. The vendor sent an instruction manual and promised delivery within two days. When questioned whether the substance was genuine, one vendor responded: “You can’t be sure.” Another shared a image of a supposed testing documentation. None inquired about body mass, medical conditions or previous experience.

Product Information and Pricing

Inside these communities, posts display black plastic packages with postal service labels, claiming to contain fresh supplies. One message stated: “It took eight of us to load them this morning.”

Customers can choose between powder vials, mixed at residence with sterile water, or pre-filled injectors typically sold at 160 pounds for 20 milligrams. When asked how much time a injector should be used, sellers give contradictory answers ranging from a few weeks to “depends on your body”.

Platform Moderation and Safety Actions

A spokesperson for the messaging service said it regularly moderated dangerous content on its platform including content that promoted the “misuse of controlled medications”. The organization noted that it eliminated “millions of pieces of harmful content each day”.

Medical Expert Warnings

“People are administering substances they cannot confirm. Even if the research behind retatrutide is sound, these digital products may not include what they claim,” said a pharmacy expert, the head of pharmacy at a pharmacy service.

Dr Crystal Wyllie of Asda Online Doctor linked the increase in demand to recent price rises for approved slimming drugs such as Mounjaro. “With prices increasing, patients are turning to social media. But counterfeit injections are highly risky. You can’t be certain what’s inside or whether the conditions they were produced in was clean,” she explained.

Her staff has already seen patients injured by self-injection from unconfirmed suppliers. “We recognize the frustration, but purchasing from messaging apps or WhatsApp is taking chances with your well-being,” stated Wyllie. “These materials could be contaminated or incorrectly dosed.”

Producer Statement

A spokesperson from Eli Lilly stated the substance was in third stage research studies and had not been evaluated or authorized by any regulatory agency globally. “Therefore at this point no one can sell [it] for human use,” they explained, adding that any product “falsely representing itself as a Lilly investigational product not yet approved … may subject patients to possibly serious medical dangers”.
