The Gaming Giant Recruits Popular Battle Royale Producer to Rescue Challenged Action Game Ambitious Title
The renowned publisher has appointed a seasoned producer from Respawn Entertainment to lead the development team at their internal studio, which is currently developing the anticipated third-person action-packed title known as this innovative game.
Leadership Change Comes After Lukewarm Response
The new appointee takes on the leadership position at the development studio following the exit of previous head Michael Condrey, who was reportedly let go due to Project Ethos' lackluster unveiling last fall.
Recently, the company's top executive David Ismailer informed employees about this strategic move through an internal memo, which stressed that early feedback sessions had shown the requirement for a distinct direction.
Ismailer stated that the team is now overhauling Project Ethos with a revised focus, aiming to better meet gamer demands.
Trend of Key Hires
The news follows a similar action taken by 2K Games in the summer, when they hired an industry veteran from Blizzard to contribute to the beloved franchise studio Cloud Chamber.
Here is the full message from the president's communication:
Team—
I know you all just finished your town hall - I trust you’re as thrilled as I am with the good news. Previously I sent you all a update, I mentioned the following: “I believe in this group. You all are some of the most dedicated and talented designers we have had the opportunity to work with - and we’re excited for that relationship to endure.”
Given your hard work and adaptability, especially over the last year, you continue to prove that.
The community feedback from last fall’s the game demo was informative. It confirmed the potential of a roguelike shooter but indicated we still had improvements to make. It uncovered the requirement for a clearer brand.
It’s been inspiring to see how far you’ve progressed. You embraced the feedback to mind and overhauled the title with a renewed vision - one that’s positioned to achieve its ambition to our audience.
Our confidence in this project grows every day. To further the incredible development you’ve made, I’m excited to welcome Ben Brinkman as the latest Director of 31st Union. After a period of talks, Ben comes aboard us on next week.
Ben’s management and background in the competitive gaming genre is vast, having spent the past decade and a half developing and overseeing some of the most recognizable series in gaming, including the acclaimed shooter, and more recently, the battle royale hit.
Please join me in greeting him soon. We are all looking forward to keep seeing the evolution of Project ETHOS in the weeks to follow.
David
Experience of the New Head
The appointee presently holds the role of senior developer and production lead at the renowned studio for their flagship title. He previously was employed at major gaming companies in various development positions on the iconic franchise series, and, earlier in his career, had periods at 2K and Electronic Arts.
Game Details and Concept
The upcoming game was revealed in October 2024 alongside a community playtest. At the time, the developers portrayed the game as a "free-to-play, 3rd-person action-packed experience and an innovative advancement on the style."
"Create your ideal gameplay session—or face defeat—in this engaging over-the-shoulder adventure! Build your hero in real-time to fit your unique tactics," the description reads. "Challenge the rivals with unique powers, stakes, and tests that shift every round. Will you safely extract with your hard-earned loot? Alternatively aim high, put it on the line, and trust your group can earn top ranking? The decision is up to you."
Project Ethos lacks an official release date or platforms, but enthusiasts can look forward to further news as creation progresses.
