Donald Trump’s latest warning to impose an further 100% tariff on Chinese goods has been labeled a “typical example” of United States’ contradictory behavior, per the Beijing administration.

A representative of the ministry further commented that the nation could introduce its own undisclosed “retaliatory steps” if the US President follows through on his warning, emphasizing that the country was “fearless” of a looming trade conflict.

This past Friday, the former president hit back at the Chinese government’s action to strengthen its regulations for overseas sales of rare earths, charging the Chinese leadership of “becoming very hostile” and attempting to hold the international market “captive”.

Furthermore, he vowed to pull out of a scheduled talks with Chinese leader President Xi, which was arranged for a conference in South Korea in the coming weeks.

Trump’s comments on last Friday rattled stock exchanges, with the benchmark US stock index dropping over two and a half percent, marking its largest decline since April.

The president’s words revived concerns of a commercial dispute between the two economic giants.

In May, the two sides had agreed to drop significant levies on each other’s products, which had led to concerns of trade halting between the economic powers.

Consequently, United States levies on Chinese goods subject to an extra thirty percent tariff compared with the start of the year, while items from the United States entering China are subject to a ten percent duty.

The most recent comments from China – released by the relevant government department in the manner of formal replies to press queries – echoed rhetoric from the zenith of the recent trade conflict.

Officials denounced United States controls on semiconductors and chips while defending Beijing’s restrictions on exports on rare earth minerals as “routine measures” to ensure domestic safety and that of all nations.

Their representative said that for “a long time”, the America had “expanded the interpretation” of national security, misused foreign shipment regulations and “adopted biased policies against the Chinese nation.

“Resorting to trade levy ultimatums is not the proper method to engage with China,” the official said.

“The nation’s view” on a tariff war has consistently been consistent: we wish to avoid one, but we are fearless of one.”

The previous week, China declared it was reinforcing overseas sale regulations on key elements and other materials essential to advanced tech manufacturing.

This move was regarded as a important measure, as the state handles about ninety percent of the planet’s critical minerals, which are utilized in products such as photovoltaic modules and mobile phones.

New remarks from both governments are being viewed by some as a method of bolstering negotiating stances in preparation for forthcoming discussions.

Remains uncertain whether a summit between the former president and Xi Jinping, expected at a summit in Seoul before month’s end, will go ahead.
